Common Reasons for Lung Surgery

Lung Surgery

There are many types of lung problems that can be treated with lung surgery. Most times surgery is necessary for a diagnosis or cure when there are tumors or cancers of the lung. Early stages of cancer are best treated by surgery. There are many other conditions that indicate the necessity for lung surgery. For example: a collapsed lung or pneumothorax and fluid or scar tissue around the lung caused by lung infections like pneumonia.

There are two different type of lung surgery. Thoracoscopy, (also know as a VATS procedure) may be used to examine the lung, stage a mass, repair a collapsed lung, etc.A thoracoscopy uses several small incisions. A small, thin tube containing a camera is placed through the hole and the image is seen on a video monitor. A thoracotomy is a large incision that allows the surgeon to see into the lung directly.
